MADURAI

Madurai is a hot South Indian city of Tamilnadu. The ancient southern Indian city of Madurai that has earned the sobriquet, 'Athens of the East', is a place of great historical importance. This city has another name called as Temple City of India. Madurai is famous for Chithirai Festivals.


Meenakshi Amman Temple


Meenakshi Amman Temple is situated at the center of Madurai city. This temple has total of 12 Gopurams or high rising towers , the four tallest Gopuram are placed at the outer walls each measuring 49 meters. The temple built in Dravidian architecture has four entrances that leads to the Meenakshi Amman shrine. The Astha Shakti Mandapan can be reached from the eastern gateway. Built under the guidance of the Nayakar's wife Rudrapathi Ammal and Tholimamal, the scenes from Meenakhshi Amman's life as a princess is depicted on the pillars.Potramarai Kulam is at the center of the temple.


Gandhi Museum

Ganthi Museum was constructed in the year of 1959. It is now one of the five Gandhi Sanghralayas (Gandhi Museums) in the country. This Museum containing photos, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, quotations and some of the selected Photostat copies of many of letters written by him and some of his renderings.

Pazhamuthircholai

Pazhamuthircholai is a Murugan temple located about 20 kms from Madurai city. This place is a forest area.There is a Temple Tower and monkeys play around the area. There is another small temple above Pazhamudhir Cholai. It is one of the six important abodes of Lord Muruga.


Thiruparankundram

Thiruparankundram is located about 5kms from Madurai city. There are several architectural features of interest, especially the rock cut portions of this hill temple dating back to the Pandya period and the life sized sculptures in the mandapams of the Nayakar period.

TIRUNELVELI

Tirunelveli City is located on the banks of river Thamirabarani. This city is famous for Halwa and sweets. The important tourist places of Tirunelveli's are Courtallam, Papanasam, Manimutahar, Nellaiyappar temple.


Courtallam

In this area they are eight waterfalls available. They are different from their heights. Eight falls are  Main Falls, Five Falls, the Shenbhaga Falls, the Tiger Falls, old Courtallam Falls, Honey Falls, Orchard falls and Sitraruvi.
Visitors to this place like to have bath in these falls from dawn to dusk. One can have bath at anytime in a day and one would not get sneezing or cold as the water is said to possess medicinal qualities of the herbal plants grown in this mountain.

Manimuthar Dam

Manimuthar Dam is located 47kms away from tirunelveli and is built on the river of Tamirabarani. It is located at just 20 km from the town of Papanasam. The dam is situated on the way from Ambasamudram to Pechiparai. Manimuthar Dam is an ideal picnic spot blessed with beautiful garden and peaceful atmosphere.

Nellaiappar Temple

This temple is situated at Tirunrlveli Town.Nellaiappar temple is one of the famous Shiva Temple. A little to south of Swami Nellaiappar Gopuram stands the Gopuram of Sri Kanthimathi Ambal temple.


Koonthankulam Bird Sanctuary

 
Koonthankulam is Situated 38 kms. from Tirunelveli city. It is a small village.This village is sparsely populated. Migratory birds start coming by December end and fly away to their northern homes by June or July after they lay eggs, hatch them and the young ones grow old enough to fly with the older ones. About 35 species of birds visit this calm but congenial village for breeding.


Papanasam

Papanasm is situated 42 km from west of Thirunelveli. The natural beauty of this place is enhanced by the Agasthiyar falls by which the Tamparani river descends into the plains. The water drops from a height of 100m over a wall of rock is covered on both sides by forested hills of the Western Ghats.

KODAIKANAL

Kodaikanl is situated 120kms from Madurai. Kodaikanal is one of the most important hill resorts in India. Berijam lake, Bryant Park, Pillar Rock, Guna Cave, Suicide Point, Coackers Walk are important tourist places of Kodaikanal.

Lake

Kodaikanal lake, one among the beautiful lakes of South India. It is located 500 meters from local busstand. It is recognized as Kodaikanal's most popular geographic landmark and tourist attraction.


Bryant Park

Bryant Park is most attractive Park in Kodaikanal. It was build in the year of 1908. The park organizes horticultural exhibits and flower shows every summer, to coincide with the peak season.


Pillar Rock

Pillar Rocks, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from the bus-stand, is a set of three giant rock pillars which stand 122 metres high.


Guna Cave

Guna cave is another important tourist places of kodaikanal. Previously this cave called  Devil’s Kitchen, are deep bat-infested chambers between the three gigantic boulders that are the Pillar Rocks.


Coacker's Walk

Coacker's Walk was constructed by Lt.Coaker in 1872. It is located 500 meters from bus stand. It is is a 1-kilometre paved pedestrian path running along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodai.


Suicide Point



Suicide point is situated 5.5kms from bus stand. Now the name of this place is Green Valley View. It  has an excellent panoramic view of the plains and a sheer drop of 1,500 metres  overlooking the Vaigai dam to the south.
